I was discussing this topic with a friend a few days ago, and he brought up the opinion that consoles shouldn't have to rely on exclusives to sell better than another console, that it should be the hardware that matters. I disagree. Sure, a console doesn't NEED exclusives to sell well, the new Xbox will probably sell great despite the lack of exclusives or IPs that Microsoft has under their belt. However, I believe that a console is defined by their exclusives. Take Nintendo for an example. If properties like Mario, Zelda, or Metroid were developed for all systems by a third party, then the company would frankly be dead in the water compared to the hardware of the Playstation and Xbox.
Not only would having no 1st party development prevent game companies from making their console more appealing, but it would also make development a train wreck. If these games were to be developed for every system, then it would take forever for games to come out because of how wildly different the PS4 hardware is with say, the Switch. Development would take a lot more time than normally because they have to account for all systems. Comfortable controls, optimized and good resolution for textures and other factors would have to be accounted for way more than normally and it would slow everything.
