Shawn Coss

It was recently brought to our attention that we're going to need to know how to draw in college. I don't know about the rest of you, but for me hand drawing is my weakest form of artistic expression; however, I recently discovered the art of Shawn Coss, who I'm learning to draw from, through his many illustrations of twisted creatures. He has several videos of him working on youtube, as well as countless works scattered throughout the internet. By taking note of how he forms each line, and the reoccurring elements in his work, I'm adopting my own style of hand drawn art.

Shawn does Ink illustrations, as well as digital paintings. He is also employed by explosm.net, the website responsible for the Cyanide and Happiness web comic. He describes his individual work as a way to release his "inner monsters." All of them are anatomically impossible, jagged and emaciated, however each one maintains its own level of personality. Although his work is off-putting at first glance, his creatures begin to look almost friendly as you explore each piece. Almost.

Even if you find his work to be completely appalling,  I still suggest taking a look. It's fresh and unique,  with a kind of originality we could all learn from.

  1. I really enjoy all the detail in all of these pieces. To me they look like they could be alive in the real world.

Last Blog Post

This is my last blog post for my senior year, so I'd like to say that I am so glad I took DMA classes throughout high school. I've learned so much and I wouldn't be where I am today without my experiences in the classes. I will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design this coming fall and I couldn't be more excited. I'm thinking about majoring and working in the film industry, however, I will be pursuing all and any forms of art in the future as well. From a fellow artist: take the opportunities that you are given and work hard doing what you love. Speed Painting

This a painting made in Photoshop by a guy who goes by the name " The Concept Painter " on Youtube. He does lots of Photoshop speed painting videos and also air brush videos. This particular painting took him 3.5 hours to complete and was made using a drawing tablet similar to the ones we use in our class.

Another Comic Book Artist (Woo!): Annie Wu

If you have talked to me for more than one minute, I am a huge nerd. So, I am making another post about comic book artists. This time it's Annie Wu. She's a comic book artists who lives in Chicago, and is one of my inspiration artists for my sustained investigation. A lot of her work is dramatic with deep and dark lines with bold colors which is makes style perfect for where I first found her work. I first saw her work in the Black Canary book in 2017. Eventually, I will talk about Marvel comic book artists, but not today. If you want to check out more of her work, here is her website:  https://www.anniewuart.com/
