Sofia Coppola is my all-time favorite filmmaker, and I attribute a lot of this to her artistic style and aesthetic choices. I recently found this video breaking down how she uses colors and lighting in her films, and it explains that while her films are generally described as "pastel", they're really more subdued due to her use of natural lighting.
A really interesting thing to take into consideration for any other filmmakers or photographers out there! You might be shocked at how effective the use of natural lighting can be. I think part of the reason this works for Sofia's films is because they already feel so dreamy, but with this natural light, it just draws the viewer into the story even more. Consider substituting fancy light setups for natural surroundings next time you wanna experiment with film or photography!
This is my last blog post for my senior year, so I'd like to say that I am so glad I took DMA classes throughout high school. I've learned so much and I wouldn't be where I am today without my experiences in the classes. I will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design this coming fall and I couldn't be more excited. I'm thinking about majoring and working in the film industry, however, I will be pursuing all and any forms of art in the future as well.
